Everyday.Hero

When I hear the word hero, I automatically place "super" in front. So when I think of someone I would consider an everyday hero, its apparent that they are pretty darn super! There are lots of people that I could name as my everyday hero, but only one has made a drastic impact in my life. I have known him for 11 years now. The first time I met him I knew he was special, but at the time I though he was just like everyone else. Back then I was blind to what was really important, but after the journey we have been on for the last 8 years he was able to open my eyes. Before, I could only see what my other friends had longed for, a wife, couple of kids, a good job, a house, a couple of cars, a dog and a cat, a great church family, the American dream. But let me tell you, my everyday hero changed everything. He is teaching me how not to be consumed by perfection, how to accept everyone no matter what they look like or what they have done, how to see others though Gods eyes, how to love.

My everyday hero is my son, Micah. He saved my life from the pits of normalism.

Micah is a bright, silly 11 year old boy, who loves brighten your day with a smile! He loves to collect things that are in a set. Loves McDonalds cheeseburgers (ketchup and pickles only, please), ChexMix, Coke and Pixar.

About 8 years ago Micah was diagnosed with Autism, a mental disorder that has no cure. Although it is not life threatening, Autism is life altering. As asked by many, "Will he ever grow out of it?", the answer is the same if some one asked this of a blind man. His form of the disorder is considered "high functioning" but he struggles with obsessive compulsiveness and does not like changes in schedule. There is no parenting handbook, because each child with Autism is different. The advise of friends and family to "just spank that kid" dose not do much good because he has a high tolerance for pain!

As I write this I hear my wife say "Micah stop licking my knee!". This may seem odd to you but this is my life with my everyday hero!

Peace.Out

  1. And I can certainly see why. It doesn't take long for that young man to steal hearts!
